Motion Graphics

Motion Graphics MTM6300 Professor: Hussein Tayrani

Motion graphics, typography, special effects, and animations are used in the industry to market and sell products and services. Students enhance existing video footage and create brand or product-based animation sequences through industry-standard motion graphics software packages. Students work with multiple forms of media, syncing, together audio, video, transitions and added effects to create professional quality video.

In the motion Graphics course students learn the fundamentals of Motion graphics with adobe after effects. Throughout the course, students learn the basis of proper workflow, basic 2D animation, masking, keying and more advanced techniques like rotoscoping. By the end of the course students have a good understanding of digital signage and how to sell a product or idea with motion graphics.

Students were assessed based on Individual Assignments (20%), In-class Quiz (10%), In-class Exercises (25%), Video Reviews (15%), Final Project (30%).

Students submit two individual assignments, one in which presents a collection of their work in a dynamic motion graphics video where learners demonstrate basic animation techniques along with creating a custom sized ad with content of their choosing.

Learners write one in-class quiz and complete seven in-class assignments including file organization, video critique, monkey see monkey do, masking, keying and motion tracking. Basics of animation, rendering, exporting videos, typography, text animation, pre-composing, increasing workflow, creating shapes, masking video, introduction to 3D animation, depth in 3D space, green screen techniques, puppeting and rotoscoping are all applied during the in-class exercises.

Four separate animation videos were reviewed, critiqued and shared within the IMD circle. The final project involved two parts. Students fashioned a business name, logo, concept and detailed story board as the first portion of the assignment. For the second portion, a promotional marketing video was crafted to be featured on their website.
